More later when I have more time. But.

I really didn’t expect anything that happened today. There is some crazy wind going on here right now (did I mention that I’m on Crete?) and you know how I feel about wind. You don’t? Oh, well I’m really superstitious about it because it always brings big change in my life.

So there is a Saharan (aka Sahara Desert) heat wave hitting a European cold front here and if you all remember correctly from your fifth grade science classes, that means some intense tornado/hurricane winds.

The winds took me, as planned, to Rethymno to find the hostel I was planning on checking in to. Turns out, the town is a dump! It doesn’t really “open” until May 15 when tourists start coming, and until then, it is creepy and empty. And the hostel was fine, but nothing to write home about. So you know what happened? I marched my butt back onto that bus and back to the paradise from whence I came. Chania.

And NOW I am staying in a REALLY nice hotel. For free. Because the people in this world are generous and wonderful and I am being guided. For the next few days, I have my own single apartment for 12 euros a night. Who said the world wasn’t a beautiful place?

Some people measure their trips in museums and historical monuments. Some people spend their time with art and architecture. Some travel through a city and shop until they drop. Some people eat their way across the world. I am not these people.

I measure my success in bridges that I sat on lazily, parks that I laid in and maybe got a sunburn, and cafes that I see just how little I can buy and how long I can sit before I get kicked out. I would rather sit on the beach and stare at the sea, sit on a bench and stare at the sky, sit in a city and stare at the scores of people around.

Different people are different.
